- asexual spheroids
- ellipsoidal to ovoid in shape with a wide posterior face
- up to 1,000 um long
- 5,000–8,000 somatic cells (connected by one another via thick cytoplasmic bridges) and 2–8 (usually 3–5) gonidia (not evident in juvenile spheroids) distributed in the posterior two-thirds portion
- sexual spheroids
- 5,000–13,000 celled
- up to 900 um long
- monoecious with 70– 250 (generally 100–150) eggs and 3–5 sperm packets

Type locality: a small pond just outside Lake Isanuma, Isanuma, Kawagoeshi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
Distribution: Japan.

- available as NIES-2739 from the Microbial Culture Collection at National Institute for Environmental Studies (Kasai et al. 2009) and UTEX LB 2967 from the Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Texas at Austin.

Etymology: The species epithet ‘‘ferrisii’’ honoring Dr. Patrick Ferris who contributed much to our knowledge of volvocalean genetics (e.g., Ferris et al. 2010).
