- asexual spheroids
- ellipsoidal to ovoid in shape
- up to 930 um long
- 3,000–6,000 somatic cells (connected by one another via thick cytoplasmic bridges) and 2– 8 (usually 4–6) gonidia (not evident in juvenile spheroids) distributed in the posterior two-thirds of the mother spheroid
- sexual spheroids
- 1,000–6,000 celled
- up to 540 um long
- monoecious with 20–80 (usually 30–50) eggs and 4–8 sperm packets

Ecology
Type locality: A fallow paddy field in Koyabu, Kuwabaracho, Hashimashi, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Distribution: Japan (Kasai et al. 2009).
Availability in culture collections or research labs
- available as NIES-2740 from the Microbial Culture Collection at National Institute for Environmental Studies (Kasai et al. 2009) and UTEX LB 2966 from the Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Texas at Austin.

The species epithet ‘‘kirkiorum’’ honoring Mr. and Mrs. Kirk who contributed much to our knowledge of Volvox genetics and development (e.g., Kirk and Kirk 1986).
